P is for Press

io9

As you probably know, my wife Emma and I did a collaborative illustration series back in 2010 called “A is for Ackbar” — a Star Wars-themed alphabet for our new son Tycho. We had no idea how wildly popular it would become on the internet, or how quickly. In the first week of its release, the project’s page on my website was logging 20,000 hits a day, which doesn’t even account for the hundreds of blogs who re-posted the images on their own site — Boing Boing, Wired, io9, the Huffington Post, LinkedIn, and tons of others.

It’s been a year and a half, and “Ackbar” seems to be making another round of the blogosphere, so it seemed like a good time to post a recap of some of the coverage the project has received.  Though it would take forever to track down all the sites that featured our work (especially since most of them didn’t notify us they were doing so), here are a few worth special mention.

firstshowing

FirstShowing.net was, appropriately, the first website to cover us. It all snowballed from here — a big thanks to them for the publicity.

Death Star PR gave us our first interview!

…and 8 Bit Dad.  Much of each interview is the same or similar, but each site asked some unique questions that drew some interesting answers out of us.

2010 ADDY awards!

The annual ADDY graphic design awards took place a few weeks ago at the University of Saint Francis. I’ve had stuff in the ADDYs since 2007, but was never able to get my hands on the elusive Gold award for some reason. Entering is also somewhat expensive, so I didn’t submit any of my freelance work this year, which are probably the projects I’m most proud of. But several B&Y projects I had worked on came home with some wins, so I can finally say I’ve won a Gold ADDY!

Actually, make that three.

2010 ADDY winners - Starcraft Marine website

GOLD, CONSUMER WEBSITE: STARCRAFTMARINE.COM
I built the main homepage Flash element for this B&Y-designed site, one of many that I’ve done over the years. Such as the one I did for:

2010 ADDY winners - Parkview website

SILVER, CONSUMER WEBSITE: PARKVIEW.COM
I also did this homepage Flash element for Parkview’s site, which won a Silver.

2010 ADDY winners - Don't Text & Drive microsite

GOLD, PUBLIC SERVICE CAMPAIGN: DON’T TEXT & DRIVE
Another Parkview job I worked on while I was at B&Y, the Don’t Text & Drive campaign took home a well-deserved Gold. I designed this microsite and built its Flash campaign viewer, as well as the three web banners that are featured therein.

2010 ADDY winners - Biomet Signature microsite

GOLD, NATIONAL CONSUMER CAMPAIGN: BIOMET SIGNATURE KNEE SYSTEM
The Signature campaign was pretty big, nabbing a Gold as well. Shown here is one of the two Signature microsites I designed and built Flash pieces for, and this will be up in my portfolio soon.

2010 ADDY winners - 3 Rivers web banner

SILVER, WEB BANNER: 3 RIVERS INTERACTIVE QUIZ
I was pretty proud of this one and was bummed that it didn’t grab a Gold — it’s not often that you see a choose-your-own-adventure banner such as this. Ah well. The banner asks you three questions about banks vs. credit unions (guess which it’s in favor of), and tallies your score at the end. You can see it in action in the Web Banner section of my Multimedia page.

Speaking of which, I’ve got a ton of new multimedia work to upload to the ol’ portfolio, which I should be able to get to later this week. So stay tuned for new stuff!
